Abstract:
Rabbi Shalom Noah Berezovsky (1911-2000) of Slonim emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1935; his parents and siblings perished in the Shoah. Discusses his views concerning the Shoah based on his writings. Berezovsky felt that the Shoah was one of the many tragedies in Jewish history which were planned by God, but he maintained that if the Jews had been able to achieve "tikkun olam" ("amending of the world"), it would not have occurred. He also saw it as "hevlei Mashiach", the suffering before the coming of the Messiah. He noted that all those killed in the Shoah died for the sake of "Kiddush Hashem" ("the sanctification of God’s name), even though they had no choice in this case and many of them were not religious. He also stressed the importance of remembering the Holocaust.
