Abstract:
In 2001 a Polish translation of Spiegelman's "Maus" appeared in Kraków (after its original version had been received negatively by Polish reviewers) at a publishing house which had to be created in order to publish this comic in Poland. This publication followed the publication of Gross's book "Neighbors" in Poland in 2000. Presents an overview of the reception of "Maus" by the mainstream Polish press. The greatest stumbling bloc in the reception of this work by the Polish public is Spiegelman's drawing the Poles as pigs; for many readers it overshadowed the contents of the comic. However, many readers were able to overcome this and to get the complicated message of "Maus". Spiegelman's visit to Poland in 2001 evoked some interest. While in the country, he gave two interviews, for the Jewish monthly "Midrasz" and on Polish television. Concludes that "Maus" is in many aspects a groundbreaking work, and its publication in Poland, together with that of Gross's "Neighbors", has triggered a discussion concerning collective memory.
