Abstract: The pogrom in 1934 in Gunzenhausen was instigated by the 21-year-old local SA leader, Kurt Bär. The easily inflamed mob of 1,500, ca. a third of the town's population, broke into Jewish homes and businesses, destroyed property, beat up Jews and dragged them off to jail. Two Jews died, allegedly as suicides, though these allegations were doubted even at the time. The regional SA and Nazi party condemned the pogrom: anti-Jewish actions were a matter for the government, not for a local SA. The leaders were put on trial and sentenced to prison terms. Before Bär went to prison, however, he shot two leading Jews who had testified against him, killing one and seriously wounding the other; he was then given a life sentence. (He subsequently died as a soldier on the Eastern front.) Notes that Nazism and antisemitism were particularly strong in Gunzenhausen, and violence against Jews occurred frequently both before and after the pogrom. Describes projects by school classes in two neighboring towns to document this pogrom (school classes in Gunzenhausen itself were not willing to take part because some of those involved were still alive).
