Abstract: Discusses Wiesel's play "Le procès de Shamgorod", in which he stages a trial against God as a variation on the biblical story of Job. Although situated in Ukraine during the Chmielnicki pogroms of the mid-17th century, the play also refers to the Holocaust, a fact mentioned by Wiesel himself in a note. Argues that Wiesel disconnected the plot from the Holocaust in order to accentuate its theological relevance. Also examines how the play deals with the subject of theodicy.
