Abstract:
Discusses the 1840 Damascus blood libel from the point of view of French society, which saw the Jewess and the Jew as Oriental figures, the former sensual and the latter greedy, both of them materialistic and powerful. The willingness of many French people to consider the Jews guilty of ritual murder reflected fears and stereotypes of Jews in their own country as well as in the East. French artists and writers portrayed images of Jews (e.g. Baron James Rothschild and his wife Betty) as disloyal to France both politically and morally. Notes that Oriental stereotypes of Jews encouraged criticism of Jews in France. Among the purveyors of negative image of Jews were the painter Ingres and the novelist Balzac.
