Abstract:
In July 1942, Nazi authorities in Amsterdam decided to intern Jews at the Schouwburg theater before their deportation to Westerbork, but all children under the age of 12 were kept at a day-care center (called the Creche) near the theater. Describes the rescue of some of the children by Jews who were interned in the theater and by workers at the children's center. The rescue was orchestrated by Walter Susskind, who managed to destroy registration cards or to change the number of children in groups, so that some could be removed in various ways by members of the underground and sent into hiding outside Amsterdam. Describes activities of four Dutch underground movements which participated in the children's rescue, as well as the fate of some of their members. Between August 1942-September 1943, when the day-care center was closed, hundreds of children were saved and sustained in hiding by these organizations.
