Abstract:
The provenance of certain works of art in German museums as the former property of Jews that was forcefully Aryanized by the Nazis is only now coming to light. At the demand of the owners' heirs, some objects have already been returned. The German government, in line with the decision of the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era-Assets of 1989, appointed a commission to investigate the provenance of such works. But in the German art world and the media there is an outcry against depriving German culture of these works, blaming "unscrupulous lawyers" and heirs who are interested only in their financial value. Jews perceive this attitude as antisemitic, and more thoughtful Germans remind the protesters that the owners did not surrender these works voluntarily.
