Abstract: Compares the implications of Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin's film "Chronique d'un été" (1961) with the effect of the Eichmann trial that same year in terms of Holocaust meaning and memory. The trial largely succeeded in stressing the uniqueness of the Jewish suffering in the Holocaust. The film contains a scene of a Holocaust survivor's testimony, and also suggests an interrelationship between the Holocaust and the suffering caused by French colonization (in this case, by France's brutal attempt to suppress Algerian independence, which involved mass torture and concentration camps). Points to the value of considering the Holocaust in comparison with other cases of mass suffering inflicted by one group on another.
Note: Appeared in French as "Le témoignage à l'âge de la décolonisation; "Chronique d'un été", cinéma-vérité et émergence du survivant de l'Holocauste" in "Littérature" 144 (2006) 56-80.
