Abstract:
Comments on recent discussions about representations of the Holocaust in popular culture, e.g. in Spielberg's film "Schindler's List". Uses the concept "postmemory" to define a specific memory of children or grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. Analyzes comic films (Roberto Benigni's "La vita è bella" and Radu Mihaileanu's "Train de vie"), an approach to the Holocaust which was taboo for about fifty years. Such popular films, which are still unusual representations, take into account prior knowledge of the viewers on the Holocaust shaped by what they learned in schools and from literature, historical books, and the media. Argues that such films are a form of therapy for Holocaust traumas.
