Abstract:
Argues that the term "Shoah", internationalized through Claude Lanzmann's film, turned into a proper noun for the extermination of European Jewry because of the correspondence between the film and the event. The tremendous force of this proper noun creates problems for researchers and historians who strive to explain, classify, and compare the Shoah to other genocides. Esther Benbassa's and Henri Meschonnic's articles in French newspapers in February 2005, criticizing the use of the word "Shoah" as a proper noun, are to be understood against this background.
