Abstract:
Presents the situation of the Jews in Poland at the time of the elections to the 4th State Duma (October 1912) and after. Describes animosities between Poles, Russians, and Jews as well as hostilities between "Polish" Jews and "Russian" Jews (Litvaks). After the election of the Polish Socialist candidate Jagiełło, who defeated the Endecja's Roman Dmowski, the Endecja party called for a boycott of the Jews in many fields, especially crafts and trade but also in professions such as physicians, musicians, etc. The slogan "Swoj do swego" ("Only from and for your own [people]") was launched in the nationalistic press. The call for boycott contributed to a deterioration in relations between Poles and Jews and to a growth in antisemitism. Some Polish democratic newspapers criticized the call for boycott, but they were not as popular as the nationalists. Concludes that the boycott did not have an important impact on Jewish commerce, industry and trade, but it demonstrated that the parties appealing to antisemitic sentiments could count on public support.
