Abstract:
Since the 19th century three ghosts have haunted Europe: communism, the "yellow" (i.e. Chinese) peril, and the Jewish peril. Both the Chinese and the Jews were seen by Europeans to be diametrically opposed to the West and as forces threatening to subvert its civilization. Stereotypical depictions of the Chinese and the Jews in the West and in Russia, as well as representations of both the Chinese and Jewish civilizations by philosophers of history, have been similar. The Chinese and the Jews have been portrayed as materialist and mercenary, lacking dignity, morality, creativity, imagination, and an aesthetic sense. Their political ideals are connected with despotism, and instead of having moral principles they are said to blindly observe Law and ritual. The Western consciousness constructed negative identities for the Chinese and the Jews, and placed them outside of history. The reflections on "Sinization" and "Judaization" of the world have many parallels. All three "ghosts" were united in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion".
