Abstract:
Heller changes Adorno's question and asks "Is it possible to write poetry about Auschwitz?" On the one hand, she states that nothing can be written about Auschwitz. On the other, she says that one can and should write about the different kinds of silence surrounding Auschwitz. Describes four types of silence, originating in irrationality, horror, shame, and remorse. Quotes Adorno's idea that one should think and live in such a way that Auschwitz could never happen again. Contends, however, that one should write about Auschwitz even if one knows that it cannot prevent another holocaust.
