Abstract:
Discusses Catholic attitudes toward Jews in the 1960s-90s, stating that while the Church condemned antisemitism, it maintained its views on supersession and on the need for the Jews to eventually convert. Concerning the Holocaust, a speech delivered by Pope John Paul II at Auschwitz in 1979 reflected efforts by the Catholic Church to "Christianize" the Holocaust. A church or a large cross was installed at every concentration camp. Although the 1998 Vatican document "We Remember" condemns antisemitism, it also stresses Nazi persecution of Catholics and defends the silence of Pius XII, in accordance with the views of John Paul II.
