Abstract:
Describes aspects of the Shoah in Holland after the German occupation in May 1940. Jews were dismissed from public services and the media, they had to set up a Judenrat, and their money was commandeered for the German treasury. Jewish professionals could serve only Jews, Jewish firms were Aryanized, and freedom of movement was limited. Jewish children had to leave the public schools, and young Jewish males were sent to labor camps. Mass deportations took place in 1942-43, sending ca. 40,000 Jews to death camps each year. Also describes rescue efforts. About 25,000 Jews went into hiding, but 9,000 of them were eventually arrested. Notes that the Protestant population was very active in helping Jews. However, the support given to the Nazis by the Dutch authorities, the National Railways, and the police facilitated the deportations.
