Abstract:
Discusses the style and contents of this monthly of the 1890s, which under a cover of harmlessness propagated radical German nationalism, war against Russia for the sake of territorial expansion, and antisemitism. In poems and essays, Jews were accused of ruining Germany and German culture. A minority willing to assimilate might be tolerated; the rest should be expelled. Heinrich Mann was editor of the journal between April 1895-March 1896; at the time, he (as well as his brother Thomas Mann) shared its views, though he expressed them less crudely. They are reflected in his novel "Im Schlaraffenland".
