Abstract:
Presents selected aspects of the biographical experiences of those Jews who survived the Holocaust in Poland on "Aryan" papers, living for an extended period with an "adopted" identity. The discussion is based on an ongoing research project, involving interviews with survivors. Outlines their problems, fears, and ways of behavior they had to learn in order to survive on the "Aryan side". Discusses, also, problems of identity after the war. Some survivors decided to return to their Jewish identity, seeing it as a moral imperative and motivated by the necessity to remember the dead. Others tried to hide their true identity and lived as Poles, hiding it even from their children.
