Abstract:
Discusses the role of Holocaust survivors in Israel in the building of national Holocaust memory, which also involved their own need to establish a connection between their past experiences and their new Israeli identities. Reports on lectures and writings of former resistance members, including Ruzka Korczak and Abba Kovner. In 1949 survivors demanded that legislation be passed regarding "collaborators"ת e.g. Jewish kapos; several Jews were tried and some were convicted. Survivors' efforts to make the Holocaust part of Israeli culture, from the late 1940s, resulted in memorials for destroyed European Jewish communities and in the establishment of Yom Hashoah as a national day of mourning.
