Abstract:
Klemperer saw himself entirely as a German; he had an aversion to many elements of Judaism and especially to Zionism. His attachment to Germany - the "real" Germany, which he distinguished from Nazism - was shaken by the anti-Jewish measures from which he suffered, and even more by the demeaning attitude of ordinary Germans - from academic colleagues to street urchins - who saw in him only the despised Jew. But his faith in the "real" Germany persisted, and after the war he saw it as his mission to participate in its reconstruction.
