Abstract: Certain attitudes and interests associated with the genre of 12th-century vernacular romance appear in Hebrew prose texts of the period, e.g. in the Hebrew narratives on the Crusades and on Jewish martyrdom. Explores the connections between these writings, with particular attention to those narrative techniques that allowed an exploration of inner conflict and motive, hence a new sense of self.
