Abstract: Discusses, in popular style, the four traumatic stages in Portuguese Jewish history in the late 15th-16th centuries that led to the end of Jewish life in Portugal. First, the expulsion from Spain in 1492 brought over 100,000 Jewish refugees to Portugal. Many of them were impoverished and were sold into slavery. Second, in 1497 King Manuel forced 20,000 Jews to convert. The third major trauma was in 1506, when 2,000 Jews were attacked by the mob and burned. Finally, the Inquisition was inaugurated in Portugal in 1536 and it became almost impossible to practice Judaism in secret. The first auto-da-fe, in 1540, signified the end of Judaism in Portugal. Zimler is the author of the novel "The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon" (1998), which deals with this period in Portuguese Jewish history.
Note: Discusses historic events corresponding with the period described in his novel "The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon".
