Abstract: Analyzes results of a survey conducted in 1996 by the Institut für angewandte Familien-, Kindheits- und Jugendforschung at the University of Potsdam among 4,600 students in grades 8-13 in Brandenburg (former East Germany) and North Rhine-Westphalia (former West Germany), including 30 in-depth interviews. It measured stereotypes, social-emotional rejection of Jews, readiness to discriminate and acceptance of violence, and rejection of German responsibility for the Holocaust. Shows that 2.5% of the young people in the West and 9.7% in the East could be classed as hard-core antisemites. Boys were far more antisemitic than girls. There was little correlation between antisemitism and the economic condition of the family. The most important factor prompting antisemitism seemed to be a high confidence in one's own abilities coupled with the perception of being thwarted by circumstances beyond one's control.
