Abstract:
Analyzes the composition of the Jewish population of Czechoslovakia in the first postwar years and the Czech attitude toward them. While the national government issued regulations intended to ensure returning Holocaust survivors their rights, lower-level bureaucrats tended to refuse them these rights - restoration of property and of citizenship - on the grounds that they were "Germanizers": in 1930 they had spoken German or sent their children to German schools. These accusations often were motivated by antisemitism. While some press organs defended the Jews, others portrayed them as greedy capitalists and exploiters who had not learned their lesson from the Holocaust. The suffering undergone by the Holocaust survivors, as well as the high participation of Jews in the Czech army in exile, were trivialized.
