Abstract:
Chronicles the odyssey of the refugee ship "St. Louis", which sailed from Germany in May 1939 with nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees on board. Retells the story using testimony from the captain and survivors, such as Herbert Karliner and his family. The boat's original destination was Havana; upon arrival, the Cubans prohibited entry to the refugees. The U.S. and Canadian authorities followed suit. The boat returned to Europe. When the war broke out in September most of the former passengers were trapped in Nazi-occupied countries; three-quarters of them were deported and perished. Contains excerpts from the French press, which document the voyage and testify to the intransigence of the authorities in the democratic countries, despite sympathy from the local population.
