Abstract:
Presents an overview of the contemporary debate between intentionalist and functionalist historians regarding the genesis of the Final Solution, which was triggered by Martin Broszat's critique of David Irving's apologetic views of Hitler. Focuses on articles by Tim Mason, Hans Mommsen, Klaus Hildebrand, and Lothar Kettenacker, which appeared in the collection "Der 'Führerstaat', Mythos und Realität" (1981), which relate only briefly to the Holocaust. Criticizes Mommsen for downplaying the ideological dimension of the Holocaust, as though the presence of antisemitism had been incidental, and Hildebrand for underestimating the singularity of the Holocaust. Commends Kettenacker for exploring the "Volksgemeischaft" ideology as an explanation for why the Germans identified with Hitler, but argues that he deals with the extermination of the Jews too briefly.
