Abstract: Discusses the impact of the discriminatory laws under Vichy on the Jewish students at the École Polytechnique. Following the transfer of the École to the Lyon region in 1940, Jews were required to register as such; their requests for financial aid were rejected, and the obligatory practical experience in their fields of study was cancelled. An official numerus clausus was installed in 1942, and by 1943 study was further restricted to correspondence. The decision by the administration to return to Paris in 1942 inspired many to join the resistance or seek options for emigration. Relates the case of André Bollier, a Jewish student who became a journalist for the resistance and died in 1944. Contends that the extent of hostility towards Jews at the Ecole was difficult to measure. On one hand, the Ecole was affiliated with the military, which implied strong ties with the Vichy government and severe constraints regarding protest against antisemitic legislation. Nevertheless, testimonies from Jewish alumnae attest to solidarity of members of the faculty with their Jewish students.
