    Abstract: Pt. 1 (pp. 157-165), "A Personal Survey", by Fred Grubel, contains an essay on the Leipzig Jewish community from 1837 to 1938, based on documents and on Grubel's own recollections. Pt. 2 (pp. 166-188), "A Statistical Analysis", by Frank Mecklenburg, contains a demographic and social survey of Leipzig Jewry in 1933-38, showing its decline up to the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. Leipzig, compared to other German cities, had a greater percentage of foreign-born (mostly Polish) Jews. In 1933, the community numbered 11,564 Jews; in the beginning of 1939 there were only 4,470 Jews living in Leipzig. Presents the distribution of Leipzig's Jews according to country of origin, place of residence in the city, age, profession, etc. in 1935, when the city's Jewish population was 10,779.
