Abstract:
Discusses the role and importance of photographs representing the atrocities in the concentration camps for understanding the truth about the Second World War and for forming a collective memory of this period. Shows how photographs published in the American press in 1945 contributed to the universalization of the images and to convincing the skeptic American public of the existence of the camps. Emphasizes the importance of photographs for the memory of the Holocaust and for transmission of this memory to future generations.
