Abstract:
Examines the reflection of the Jewish ultra-Orthodox memory of the Holocaust in the image of Rabbi Kalonymus Klemish Shapira as presented in three articles published during 1959-80 in the Israeli monthy "Beit Yaakov". Shapira died in 1943 after his deportation from Warsaw, where he was an important hasidic rabbi. States that, in general, the image of Rabbi Shapira represents the ideal rabbi and leader during the Holocaust in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox. However, his realistic presentation of existential and religious dilemmas experienced by believers (in his wartime sermons, published after the war) challenge the unconditional "justification of God" which characterizes the ultra-Orthodox memory of the Holocaust. Moreover, his exemplary leadership casts a shadow on the moral and religious conduct of those religious leaders who saved themselves by escaping. "Beit Yaakov" does not ignore problematic aspects of Shapira's legacy, but introduces them in a non-challenging way.
