Abstract: Surveys the Kinot and Selichot (Hebrew liturgical poems) written in the Rhineland after the massacres of the First and Second Crusades, and analyzes them stylistically and thematically. Notes that most of them concentrate on the martyrdom of the Jews rather than the actions of the Crusaders; that the contents range from concrete description of events to generalized lamentation and pleas for salvation; and that they may be divided into two types: the "Cologne type" chronicles martyrdom at the hands of others; the "Mainz type" portrays suicide and the killing of children at the hands of their parents in order to escape conversion. The latter phenomenon is unique to this period, and the poets compare it to the Binding of Isaac. Prints the Hebrew text and a German translation of Selichot by Joel ben Isaac Halevi of Bonn and Menahem ben Jacob of Worms.
