Kurzfassung: Based mainly on materials from the Rothschilds' archives in London and Paris. Examines the activities of the Rothschilds, especially the Paris branch, undertaken to exert financial pressure on the Russian government in order to alleviate the plight of the Jews in Russia. Business relations between the Rothschilds and Russia were greatly expanded in the 1860s. They were interrupted between 1875-87 for various reasons, including the 1881-82 wave of pogroms in Russia. These relations were suspended for the second time in 1891 because of the expulsion of Jews from Moscow and other anti-Jewish measures. The Rothschilds severed their relations with Russia for the third and final time in 1903, in the wake of the Kishinev pogrom. The Rothschilds corresponded with Russian officials, trying to convince them to refrain from anti-Jewish measures. In this struggle for Russian Jews, the Rothschilds acted as an independent diplomatic force, not relying solely on the intervention of their respective governments.
