Abstract:
Observes that until the 1970s a universalist view and a rationalist anti-fascist explanation of Nazi crimes were in the forefront of public consciousness; in the last twenty years this was replaced by emphasis on the uniqueness and irrationality of the Jewish Holocaust. Peter Weiss partook in this change. In his novel "Die Ästhetik des Widerstands", especially in the third part, the father expresses the rationalist view while the mother identifies with the Jewish victims and their concrete, irrational suffering which only poetic language can try to express. The two modes of discourse repel each other but simultaneously complete each other.
