Abstract:
Examines the concept of stereotypes as used by social scientists, and the ethnocentric theory that ethnic groups rate themselves positively and other groups negatively. A study of Jewish-, Ukrainian-, French- and German-origin high school students in Winnipeg shows that Jews were rated least favorably by the other three groups. Both Jews and non-Jews agreed that Jews are excitable, competitive, domineering, emotional, wealthy, etc., but the non-Jews included unfavorable traits such as dishonest and materialistic.
