Abstract:
Discusses the position of the Jews vis-a-vis the French-Canadian separatist movement in Quebec. The Jews are anxious due to expressions of antisemitism (including anti-Israel actions and sentiments, and xenophobia) on the part of French-Canadian politicians and journalists. Ca. 40% of Canada's Jews are Holocaust survivors or their descendants; they are particularly sensitive to manifestations of nationalism which are often accompanied by antisemitism. Although French-Canadians do not evince more antisemitism than the Anglophone population, Jews are afraid that separatism will cause erosion of minority rights, that they will always be "outsiders" in the eyes of French-Canadians, that they will suffer economically due to a policy of "French-Canadians first", and that their communal institutions may be forced to become public institutions or lower their level of services - this might mean the end of the Jewish communal structure. Many Jews have left Montreal; others are making efforts to improve relations with French-Canadians. Many believe that these efforts are too little and too late.
