Abstract:
Surveys the situation of Jews in communist Poland, noting the tendency to exaggerate the number of Jews and their political role, and the persistence of popular antisemitic stereotypes and their manipulation by the state, especially in the antisemitic campaign of 1968. Notes positive changes in the Catholic Church's attitude towards Jews and Judaism in the 1970s and its efforts in opposing official antisemitism. However, antisemitism revived in the 1980s when Jews were accused of causing the failure of the Solidarity movement and antisemitic pamphlets circulated in churches.
