Abstract:
Discusses the figure of the French politician Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929) and his political philosemitism, especially during the Dreyfus Affair. Yet Clemenceau's literary work, a collection of stories - "Au pied du Sinaï" (1898) - is full of anti-Jewish prejudices. Attempts to understand and to explain this contradiction. States that it can be partially explained by Clemenceau's strong anti-clericalism, which reinforced his political philosemitism, but even ideological conviction can not stop the "force of prejudice". Suggests that, possibly, his philosemitism existed only on the political scene.
