Kurzfassung:
Analyzes Vichy anti-Jewish legislation in comparison with the Nuremberg Laws and particularly with the racist Italian legislation. Examines the different definitions of the Jews in the decrees enacted between 1940-42, noting the increasing importance of racial criteria rather than religious ones in the frequent cases of "half-Jews" or mixed marriages. Mentions the Reich's concern to adapt the anti-Jewish laws of the occupied zone of France to Vichy legislation and to take into account French sensibilities. The Vichy decrees expressed the regime's wish to demonstrate its capacity to promote an independent anti-Jewish discriminatory policy and to create original French legislation in this regard.
