Abstract:
Jewish emigration from Poland to Germany grew significantly during the first years of Polish independence, though many had to remain in Germany illegally. With the rise of Nazism, many of these immigrants left for the west, "encouraged" by the German authorities. On 31 March 1938 the Polish government passed a law revoking the citizenship of those resident abroad for a number of years. This led the Nazis to detain and deport large numbers of Jewish Polish citizens. Of the ca. 11,500 who remained in Germany in July 1939, only a handful survived the Holocaust.
