Abstract: Since 1948, a myth of Austrian innocence has developed, disclaiming responsibility for Nazi acts and claiming that initial enthusiasm for the Anschluss in 1938 soon gave way to disillusionment and resistance. Austrians want to avoid any threat to this myth which has absolved them from punishment, reparations, denazification, or a genuine effort to come to terms with the Jews. The Waldheim Affair thus aroused furious reactions. Waldheim's argument that he was performing his duty evoked little opposition. Antisemitism was publicly expressed in protests against the "defamation" of Austria by the World Jewish Congress.
