In seiner Analyse der israelischen Außenpolitik und Diplomatie gegenüber den arabischen Staaten und den Palästinensern seit der Staatsgründung zeigt Shlaim, prominenter Vertreter der israelischen "neuen Historiker", dass die von Ze'ev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky (Begründer des revisionistischen Zionismus) 1923 vorgeschlagene "iron wall"-Strategie trotz der anfänglichen Ablehnung auf Seiten der Labor-Zionisten zum Leitprinzip israelischer Außenpolitik wurde.
