Abstract: Rabbi Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira (1889-1943) served as spiritual leader of a Hasidic and broader Jewish community for thirty-five years. After the Holocaust, his writings were thought to have been lost. Since their rediscovery in 1951 and increasingly in recent years, their author’s image has become widely known. His leadership during the Holocaust embodies the heroism and faith of a Jewish figurehead. Testimony by his followers, along with the sermons he wrote in the Warsaw ghetto (19391942), published in a volume entitled Sermons from the Years of Rage – Esh Kodesh, are invaluable resources. As a result, most scholarly attention to his work and deeds has focused on his oeuvre dating from the Holocaust. Yet a second important facet of Rabbi Shapira’s work concerns Jewish education. In Hovat hatalmidim, published during his lifetime (1932), he presents a unique and detailed educational theory, and one that had no precedents among earlier hasidic leaders. It was well-received in his day and bears relevance for educators of our times as well. This continued interest arouses certain questions. What guiding principles underly his educational method? How did he envision their realization? This paper builds on research done by Zvi Leshem, Daniel Reiser, Moria Herman, and Ron Wacks on Rabbi Shapiro’s oeuvre as a whole, and focuses on the theme of the Tsadik (torat hatsadik) as it finds expression in his educational theory. In addition, I draw on the testimony of Rabbi Shapiro’s hasidim to examine the ways his educational method was practiced during his lifetime.
