Abstract:
Associates the idea of a Jewish threat to traditional Egyptian culture with distorted ideological attempts to come to terms with fundamental transformations in contemporary Egyptian society. The "Jew" symbolizes the threatening "Other"; this view is not primarily related to the contemporary Arab-Israeli conflict. "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" supposedly reflects, both specifically and symbolically, repeated Jewish efforts, including via globalization and the alleged spreading of sexual and other kinds of immorality, to undermine Egyptian society. Some Egyptian intellectuals have decried the attempt to project blame onto others, especially the Jews, for problems of national culture. Notes that, while Christian and Muslim religious images have added to anti-Jewish stereotypes in Egypt, they are not the primary source.
