Abstract:
Traces Jewish history in the city and surrounding region of Würzburg, Germany, from 1096 until World War II. Mentions a blood libel in 1147, which resulted in the murder of 22 Jews; attacks during the Crusade of 1188; host desecration accusations in 1336; well-poisoning accusations in 1349; and four pogroms between 1489-1550. During 1558-1773 the few remaining Jews in the town left, having been threatened with forced conversion. By the 19th century, some Jews had settled in the region. in 1814 the Jewish community consisted of 29 families who requested citizenship, but in 1819 they were persecuted during the "Hep! Hep! riots". In the second half of the 19th century, the Jewish community was confronted with increasing antisemitism. During the Nazi period, those Jews who had not left the city were deported in 1941-42. After the war, a Jewish community was reconstructed.
