Abstract:
A lecture delivered at a study day held at Tel-Aviv University on 22 November 2003. Reports on responses in Israel to the ghetto revolts in the early postwar period. Focuses on the view of David Ben-Gurion, who felt that the revolts had no educational value for Israelis because the situations in Europe and in Israel were so different. Resistance fighters in Europe had fought for their honor, with the knowledge that they would probably not survive. Notes that Zionist ideology actually negated the diaspora mentality and not diaspora Jews, and that views concerning resistance in the Holocaust changed through the years, affected by Israeli politics.
