Abstract:
Discusses Hayyim Nahman Bialik's writings on the 1903 Kishinev pogrom, particularly "Al ha-shehitah", written before he arrived in Kishinev, and "Be-ir ha-haregah". Notes that the first poem protests against God and the perpetrators, while the later one criticizes the victims, especially the men, for failing to defend themselves. Although Bialik had praised Jewish martyrs in previous works, he and many others who wrote after the pogrom expressed the need for a reevaluation of Jewish identity and the Jewish attitude toward strength, especially masculine strength.
