Abstract:
Relates to 1982 as a watershed for American Jews, contending that their self-confidence and optimism were threatened as they had not been since the antisemitic 1930s. Israel's incursion into Lebanon led to polarization in the Jewish community and deep divisions over attitudes towards Israel. However, despite the Jews' fears, antisemitism did not increase in the U.S.
