Abstract: Revisionism or denial of genocides takes place not only malevolently but also unconsciously or "innocently." The latter little-recognized phenomenon requires study. A theory is presented of "unconscious bigots" who need to keep themselves and their images of the world clean and of those "who are not bigoted against a specific people" and are unconscious of their need to hate. The genocide denial of such people may be genuine but it is dangerous because it implies that crime, no matter how horrendous, does pay since it is not condemned. The psychological mechanisms of denial are illustrated on two continuums: 1. from "innocence" to malevolence re: facts of genocide; 2. from "innocent disavowals of violence" to celebrations of violence. A parallel is drawn between "innocent deniers" and bystanders who allow genocides to take place. The argument presented relates to Holocaust denial specifically; this is explicit mainly in the tables included.
    Note: Including the Holocaust.
