Abstract:
In 1987 the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) approved a document entitled "A Theological Understanding of the Relationship between Christians and Jews." The document contains seven theological affirmations and explications. Discusses here the second and third, which state that the relationship of Christians to Jews should be seen as one of engraftment (i.e. the Church has been engrafted into the covenant of God with the Jews) rather than supersession, which was a 2nd century construction. Analyzes the Gospels of John and Matthew and the writings of Paul to show that supersessionism existed in the 1st century and is a fundamental tenet of Christian teaching. The fifth affirmation repudiates the use of Christian doctrines to support anti-Jewish attitudes and actions. Commends the sensitivity of this document as a whole, but objects to the rejection of supersessionism. Pp. 343-347 contain a response to this article by William p. Anderson who opposes Hann's validation of the doctrine of supersession.
