Abstract:
Based on a lecture delivered at Tel-Aviv University, March 1987. Discusses the possible effects of the status of Salonika's Jews among their non-Jewish neighbors, of their relations with other Jewish communities in Greece and abroad, as well as of the available opportunities for self-help, on their low rate of survival - less than 25%, compared with more than 50% in the rest of Greece. States that Salonika's Jews became victims of their isolation from their Greek neighbors, their lack of information about the extermination, their lack of financial means and lack of connections with Jews abroad, the serenity of their leadership which rejected rescue proposals by the resistance movements, and their close family connections which impeded the youth from rescuing themselves. All of this enabled the Nazis to conduct their swiftest deportation, carried out in three weeks of turmoil which completely surprised the Jews of Salonika after two years of a relatively bearable occupation.
