Abstract:
Alfred Kerr ist uns in Erinnerung als der einflussreichste Theaterkritiker Deutschlands im 20. Jahrhundert. Er rühmte Henrik Ibsen als den Ahnherrn der Moderne, kämpfte für Gerhart Hauptmann, Arthur Schnitzler, Frank Wedekind, George Bernard Shaw, entdeckte Robert Musil, stritt gegen den Talmiruhm Hermann Sudermanns, kämpfte mit Bertolt Brecht, verspottete Karl Kraus und setzte gegen Thomas Manns endlose Sätze seine knappen, treffenden, die deutsche Sprache präzisierenden Sentenzen. Er war um 1910 verehrt von den jungen Dichtern, kämpfte in der Republik gegen Rückwärtserei und die Nazis. Goebbels hasste ihn so sehr, dass Kerr sich 1933 ins Exil retten musste.
